Yellow-flowered barkūnas is a biennial herbaceous plant of the bean family, genus Barkūnas, growing up to 250 cm in height. Stem erect, branched. The leaves are trifoliate, pinnate. The flowers are small, yellow, concentrated in long bunches. The seeds are greenish-yellow, the weight of 1000 seeds are only 2 g. It blooms all summer, not abundantly in the first year. The seeds ripen in August and September. Prefers more fertile, neutral and heavier soil, so it is rarely cultivated in sandy areas. Thanks to a well-developed root system, it tolerates drought well. It matures faster than the white-flowered barberry, which makes seed production easier. This is one of the most popularplants: meadow bees can collect 500-700 kg of honey from one hectare of yellow flowers. The yellow-flowered bark contains the crystalline substance coumarin, coumarinic acid, melilotin, and purine derivatives. The seeds contain protein, starch, and oil. The plant raw material of the yellow-flowered barberry is used in pharmaceuticals and as a spice in the alcohol and food industries. Perfect for green fertilization. The yield of green mass can reach 20-25 t/ha, and the amount of nitrogen incorporated with above-ground and root mass is 200 kg ha. The seed is very small, with a hard shell, it needs a lot of moisture to germinate, so it should be sown as early as possible in the spring. Before sowing, it is recommended to rub the seeds with a special scarifier or clover grinder, then the seeds will germinate faster.
